Basil holds an interdisciplinary MA in International Relations, a MRes in International History and Politics and a PhD in International Relations from the Graduate Institute of International Studies and the University of Geneva. He is currently Researcher at the University of St Andrews and was previously Visiting Research Fellow with the Oxford-Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War, University of Oxford.

His main fields of specialization are international security in general and the maritime dimension of security as well as the European security and defence policy in particular. His current research projects notably concern the evolution of the concept of maritime frontier in the post-Cold War era, and the European policies regarding the projection of security.
